Google will invest $526 million in Cypress Solar, a renewable energy facility built specifically to power its $4 billion West Memphis data center. The 600-megawatt solar field with 350-megawatt battery storage will therefore power the electrical grid that supplies Google’s massive artificial intelligence operations. The Cypress Solar facility is located in Jefferson County, Arkansas, approximately one-third of the $1.6 billion total project cost. In the meantime, Google will pay an extra $190 million to Entergy for necessary upgrades to its transmission system.
The special rate contract with Google was approved by Entergy Arkansas in December 2025, but the specifics were not disclosed until recently released public records. In particular, Google will make $443 million in accelerated payments and $83 million in minimum demand payments for Cypress Solar construction. The facility is a key renewable energy infrastructure investment to help Google meet its corporate clean energy targets and greenhouse gas offset obligations. The Beacon Point data center is also making headway as Anthropic’s $35 billion cloud agreement with Lambda has put the project firmly in the spotlight. The six-year deal provides for approximately 350 megawatts of computing power for Anthropic’s AI initiatives. Meanwhile, Nvidia will reportedly lease the facility and provide Lambda with chips.
Outlook on Google’s West Memphis Data Center
Google’s West Memphis data center will consume more electricity than any other facility in the history of Entergy. In particular, the plant will start providing electric service in February 2027, at a minimum demand of 40 megawatts. Demand will increase gradually to 480-megawatt minimum and 600-megawatt maximum contract demand over a period of more than 30 months, reaching October 2029.
In addition, Google will buy renewable energy credits from Cypress Solar, which will offset the company’s reported greenhouse gas emissions. The credits are a way to demonstrate that Google has used clean energy, which helps back up its claims of sustainability for its artificial intelligence and search infrastructure. Also, in June 2026, Entergy residential customers will start paying $5.77 per month for Cypress Solar and other generation projects.
Contract Structure Raises Questions about Rate Treatment and Construction Financing
The special rate contract has some unusual provisions that make Google’s $526 million contribution a ratepayer payment, not construction aid. This, in turn, will not lower Entergy’s rate base, which could result in higher customer rates than would be the case in a typical construction financing arrangement. The initial contract period is for 20 years, and automatically renews for three-year periods thereafter until terminated by either party. If Google violates the agreement, it will be liable for about $2 billion in termination fees over the first 13 years.
