The construction of the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway project is making headway with ongoing work into Naivasha. At present, large earthworks have been made from Rironi, through Kiamba and Kimende, and are progressing steadily on towards Naivasha. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and the contracted developers are also working together to carry out heavy excavation works to ensure that the foundation of the road is of world class standards.
The civil works are also ongoing, and will be used to upgrade the drainage system in the region, with several large culverts being constructed along the way. A significant culvert is being built near the Naivasha wildlife sanctuary to ensure water flow is controlled and the ecosystem is maintained. The proposed road expansion is 175 km from Rironi to Mau Summit.
Furthermore, it is intended to be a lively transit hub, featuring toll plazas, business centers, and smooth logistics routes. The Kenyan government and engineering teams are continuing to work at a fast pace on the $800 million-plus multi-lane highway. The ongoing dualling also seeks to create a very efficient economic transport district.
Other projects that were of monumental scale but fell short include the Usahihi expressway road project that was to stretch from Nairobi to Mombasa. The Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway was a proposed $36 billion toll road project, planned as Africa’s largest of its kind.
Outlook on the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway
The Rironi-Mau Summit Highway has been called a “regional gateway” that will enable year-round economic activities. This is based on the project’s technical assessments, which strongly emphasize the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway as a key corridor in the Northern Corridor. The construction teams will complete the entire route by April 2027 after a quick site mobilization.
The Transport Ministry will also be opening the first Naivasha stretch this August. In the meantime, minor public disturbances have occasionally halted site meetings as residents seek answers on the future of the highway corridor, their properties and immediate traffic issues around the Kiamba and Kimende earthworks.
“We’re excited about all that’s going to happen, which could reduce our travel times, but not if it’s right in our front window,” one resident said. After a multi-year saga involving several counties, the development moves forward with the government officially declaring that expedited dualling is making the Rift Valley region a reality.
