Hitachi Energy constructing a $457 million power transformer manufacturing Plant in South Boston, the biggest such investment in Southside Virginia. The development will transform the area into a leading manufacturing hub for high-tech electrical infrastructure.
The facility directly answers skyrocketing national energy demands driven by the domestic manufacturing resurgence and rapid AI infrastructure growth. By securing localized supply chains for major electrical grid hardware, this facility serves a vital role in national energy security and the global artificial intelligence race
Upon completion, the campus will be the largest manufacturing site for large power transformers in the United States. It establishes local manufacturing for critical infrastructure that previously suffered from years-long supply chain bottlenecks.
The plant will focus on big power transformers, a technology needed for high voltage transmission, artificial intelligence-driven data centers, energy generation, and heavy industry. When complete, it will be the largest transformer factory in the US, producing more than 825 new engineering, production, and operations positions.
Additionally, the South Boston, Virginia transformer manufacturing expansion aligns closely with a parallel wave of grid infrastructure investment underway across the United States, including a 600,000-square-foot power transformer facility that recently broke ground in Colbert County, Alabama. Like the Virginia project, the Alabama development is aimed at scaling domestic transformer production capacity to meet rising demand from data centers, industrial electrification, and broader grid modernization efforts. Together, these projects reflect a coordinated buildout of critical electrical equipment manufacturing across multiple regions, reinforcing supply chain resilience and supporting long-term energy system expansion.
State Incentives
The project secured a $29.4 million performance grant for site preparation via the Virginia General Assembly’s Major Employment and Investment (MEI) Commission.
Community Infrastructure
To support the influx of workers, Virginia Housing and Halifax County partnered to build 96 workforce housing units. This housing push is backed by a $2 million state grant. The local government is simultaneously expanding regional childcare options to support the manufacturing workforce.
Governor Glenn Youngkin, speaking in September 2025, described the expansion as a watershed moment for the region, emphasizing that both the new jobs and the transformers produced in Virginia would strengthen the nation’s electrical grid. He also noted that to support the expanding workforce, the state, Halifax County, and Virginia Housing are moving forward with construction of a 96-unit residential complex to help align housing availability with industrial growth.
In the same September 2025 announcement, U.S. Senator Mark Warner highlighted the broader economic and strategic value of the project, calling it a major boost for Southside Virginia’s economy. He also pointed to its significance for U.S. energy security and its role in supporting the continued expansion of the artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing sectors.

South Boston is one of the sites for Hitachi Energy’s $9 billion global expansion program, to drive growth in production and meet rising electricity demand around the world.
For Southside Virginia, the investment is not just a manufacturing success. It lays the foundation for sustained economic growth, creating high-value employment and placing the region firmly at the forefront of driving America’s energy future.
Hitachi Energy’s push, however, extends well beyond Virginia. The company has also partnered with Grid United to advance the North Plains Connector, an interregional transmission project linking Montana and North Dakota. Under a newly signed Engineering Services Agreement (ESA), the two firms have begun shaping the technical and system requirements for the 420-mile HVDC line, which will boost transmission capacity between the eastern and western U.S. grids.
Foreign companies with strong business ties to the United States are increasingly seeking to establish permanent operations within the country amid the ongoing tariff war. A notable example is Samsung Electronics, which is building a massive semiconductor manufacturing plant in Taylor, Texas.
