Tahliyat Miyah Magtaa SPA and Dar El-Handasa recently signed a contract under which the latter will provide studies, advice, and monitor engineering for the rehabilitation of the El-Mactaâ Seawater Desalination Plant in the wilaya of Oran, north-west of Algeria.

Dar El-Handasa was selected following a national and international tender launched by Tahliyat Miyah Magtaa after the termination of an operating contract with Hyflux, a water treatment company based in Singapore.

According to Hamouda Ahmed Ibn Sina, the general manager of the seawater desalination plant of El-Mactaâ the contract with Hyflux was terminated due to difficulties in the operation of the plant, maintaining a stable level of production and degradation of production during the first four months of the current year.

Dar El-Handasa has seven months to complete the study, diagnosis, and development of the specifications that will lead to the goal of achieving a daily production of 500,000 m3 of drinking water at the desalination plant by 2024 while ensuring the quality of the desalinated water.

Budget for the El-Mactaâ Seawater Desalination Plant rehabilitation project

The cost of the El-Mactaâ Seawater Desalination Plant rehabilitation project is approximately 2.701bn. Mr. Hamouda said that “it was evaluated for a period of 30 months, between the study, the follow-up and the realization of the rehabilitation of the El-Mactaâ Seawater Desalination Plant”.

The success of this project will make drinking water available for 5 million people in the area concerned and it will be of great importance in the face of water stress in The North African country which is among the countries that will face serious water shortages by 2040, according to the 2015 report of the World Resources Institute (WRI).
