The landscape of European theme park entertainment shifted fundamentally on March 29, 2026. Following years of large-scale construction, Disneyland Paris officially opened World of Frozen, serving as the anchor masterpiece for a historic rebranding of its second gate from Walt Disney Studios Park to Disney Adventure World.
This project represents the single most ambitious, multi-year expansion of the resort since its inception, moving away from “studio backlot” aesthetics toward highly immersive, narrative-driven worlds. Below is a comprehensive overview of the facility, the architectural teams, and the massive civil engineering triumph behind the project.
Project Scope and Financial Investment
The overall master plan for the park’s expansion operates under a massive €2 billion ($2.2 billion USD) investment framework backed by The Walt Disney Company. This heavy capital deployment nearly doubles the footprint of the existing park, funding a massive logistical overhaul of infrastructure, civil engineering, and landscape design.
Infrastructure: What Was Expanded?
The expansion area completely reimagined the park’s central layout, building out several major facilities from scratch:
- The Kingdom of Arendelle: A fully realized architectural village mimicking traditional Norwegian rosemaling artistry, complete with a physical village clock tower and Arendelle Castle.
- The North Mountain: A 36-meter-tall engineered rockwork structure topped with a 13-meter-tall glowing replica of Elsa’s Ice Palace.
- Adventure Bay: An immense, custom-engineered 70,000-cubic-meter central lake. It acts as a maritime stage equipped with underwater infrastructure to host the “Disney Cascade of Lights” drone and fountain nighttime spectacular.
- Adventure Way: A wide, heavily landscaped green promenade designed to smoothly distribute heavy guest crowds from the front of the park toward the new waterfront.
- Raiponce Tangled Spin & Dining: A brand-new Tangled-inspired family attraction built along the promenade alongside 15 brand-new dining locations, including the upscale Regal View Restaurant & Lounge overlooking the water.
The Design and Construction Teams
Bringing a project of this scale to life required an alliance of internal visionaries and massive European civil engineering corporations:
- Architects and Creative Directors
The entire master plan was designed and supervised by Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), the specialized, multi-disciplinary creative arm of Disney comprising architects, engineers, and show producers. The creative vision for the expansion was spearheaded under the leadership of Michel Den Dulk, Vice President and Portfolio Executive Creative Director at Walt Disney Imagineering.
- General Contractors and Theme Artisans
At the peak of development, the construction site utilized more than 800 distinct construction professionals working simultaneously. Major industry names were contracted to execute the complex build:
- Bouygues Construction: One of Europe’s largest construction firms, brought in to handle massive structural engineering and foundational work.
- Themed Construction Specialists: Firms like AAB (Atelier Artistique du Béton), TAA Group, Scruffy Dog, and The Deluxe Group were contracted to execute the highly specialized thematic finishes, artificial rockwork mapping for the North Mountain, and structural facades.
- Ride System Engineering: Built utilizing marine attraction engineering by Oceaneering and high-capacity ticketing/audio layouts from Tejix and Vivaticket.
Project Timeline and Completion
The project moved through intensive phases of vertical construction and mechanical testing through 2024 and 2025. Scaffolding was stripped down throughout early 2026 to reveal the final thematic finishes, leading to final technical previews.
The facility officially completed its handovers and celebrated its grand opening on March 29, 2026, welcoming the public and shifting current construction teams toward the next phase of the master plan: the upcoming Lion King land.
Disneyland Paris expansion demonstrates the scale of investment currently reshaping the global theme park industry. Similar ambitions can be seen in the United Kingdom, where Universal is moving forward with plans for its £7.3 billion Universal United Kingdom Resort, one of the largest entertainment developments ever proposed in Europe.
