Phoenix Energy to construct mega solar power plant in Egypt

Egypt’s proposed Phoenix Energy solar project remains part of the country’s expanding renewable energy pipeline as authorities continue accelerating utility-scale solar and battery storage investments. While the project has not yet reached construction, Egypt has significantly advanced its clean energy programme during 2026 by approving and implementing several large-scale solar developments. These projects support the country’s target of increasing renewable energy to at least 42% of the electricity mix by 2030.

Since the project was first announced, no construction award or financial close has been publicly confirmed for the Phoenix Energy development. The project therefore remains in the planning and development pipeline.

Meanwhile, Egypt has accelerated several utility-scale renewable projects during 2026. The government plans to commission approximately 3 GW of new solar capacity and 600 MW of battery energy storage this year while strengthening grid infrastructure to accommodate additional renewable generation.

The country’s renewable energy programme has also gained momentum through several new solar and battery storage developments across Minya, Qena and other governorates. These investments demonstrate Egypt’s continued commitment to becoming one of Africa’s leading renewable energy markets.

The broader market momentum is illustrated by the recently awarded West Minya Solar Power Project, where a joint venture between Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy and Hassan Allam Construction secured a $560 million EPC contract to deliver a 1,000 MWac solar plant with a 600 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). That project highlights the scale of investment now entering Egypt’s renewable energy sector.
