Saudi Power Grid Expansion

Saudi power grid expansion is gaining fresh financial support through a cooperation agreement worth up to $3 billion. The arrangement links Saudi Energy with French public investment bank Bpifrance. It will support electricity infrastructure projects, procurement activities, and strategic investments across the Kingdom.

The agreement targets projects that develop and expand Saudi Arabia’s power transmission network. It will also strengthen grid reliability, stability, and capacity for rising electricity demand.

Saudi Energy signed the agreement during the Saudi-French Investment Roundtable in Paris. The meeting coincided with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s state visit to France.

Saudi Energy previously operated as Saudi Electricity Company before adopting its current trading name. The company announced the rebranding in February 2026.

Saudi power grid expansion therefore gains an important financing mechanism as electricity infrastructure investment accelerates. The funding framework could improve access to international capital for major construction and procurement programs.

Saudi power grid expansion gains wider financing flexibility

The agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding signed by both parties in November 2025. That memorandum established a framework for procurement financing facilities.

The framework supports Saudi Energy’s purchasing program and diversifies funding sources for strategic projects. It also covers grid development and equipment designed to improve network stability.

Furthermore, the cooperation includes contracts and projects linked to GE Vernova and its subsidiaries. The arrangement could later extend to additional French companies.

BNP Paribas and HSBC will coordinate the financing process. The parties also plan to expand the pool of participating international lenders.

This approach should diversify liquidity sources while increasing financing flexibility for future infrastructure developments. Consequently, Saudi Energy can strengthen its capacity to execute a growing project pipeline.

Saudi power grid expansion supports rising electricity demand

The financing comes as Saudi Energy continues expanding its transmission and distribution infrastructure. Its latest results show substantial investment across the national electricity system.

Saudi Energy reported 108,141 circuit kilometers of transmission network at the end of June 2026. The distribution network reached 868,946 circuit kilometers during the same period.

Transmission substation capacity also reached 559,831 MVA. Meanwhile, the company energized 49 transmission substations and 131 transmission transformers during the first half.

The company also reported 17.8 GW of grid-connected renewable capacity. Battery energy storage capacity increased from 8 GWh to 18 GWh during the second quarter.

These investments support a more flexible network as renewable generation expands across Saudi Arabia. They also strengthen the system’s ability to accommodate future electricity consumption.

Saudi Energy’s capital expenditure reached SAR 38.7 billion during the first half. Investment focused on transmission, distribution, battery storage, and generation infrastructure.

The company also raised approximately SAR 47.9 billion through sukuk and various financing facilities. It secured an additional SAR 15.8 billion Murabaha facility in July.

The financing also supports Saudi Arabia’s broader electricity infrastructure ambitions. This expansion comes as the Kingdom advances major generation projects, including the $3.6 billion expansion of QIPP, one of the world’s largest independent power generation developments.
