SunPower Inc. announced Tuesday, October 6, that it has broken ground on a solar-power system for a new artificial-intelligence data center in Reno, Nevada.
The groundbreaking marks the first phase of SunPower’s work on the data-center development. The company said the solar installation will support the facility’s energy needs while providing an opportunity to expand its commercial project capabilities.
SunPower described the installation as a complex project with rigorous performance requirements. The company acknowledged that the solar project is not yet at the 100-megawatt scale, but said the work represents an important step in its expansion into larger commercial energy systems.
John Paul Bergh, executive vice president of Cobalt Power Systems and SunPower New Homes, said the company was honored to receive the first phase of the Reno AI data-center project.
AI Data Centers Drive New Energy Demand
The development highlights the growing connection between artificial-intelligence infrastructure and new energy projects. Data centers require substantial and reliable electricity, while solar installations can provide additional generating capacity and help reduce reliance on conventional grid supplies.
SunPower did not disclose the total size of the Reno data center, the solar system’s final generating capacity, the project’s total cost, the identity of the data-center operator or the expected completion date.
The company also did not provide details about battery storage, backup generation, land use, water consumption, construction employment or the project’s potential effect on local electricity demand.
SunPower provides solar technology, services and installation for residential, commercial, new-home and multifamily customers. The company said the Reno project will help strengthen its commercial systems business as demand grows for energy infrastructure supporting AI and other high-performance computing facilities.
For now, the confirmed milestone is the groundbreaking of the solar-power system. Further details about the broader data-center development and its full energy plan are expected as the project progresses.
A Different Energy Approach in Pennsylvania
While SunPower’s Reno project links AI data-center development with solar power, a separate project in Pennsylvania is taking a different approach to supplying energy.
Fit Energy plans to redevelop former mining and aggregate land in Newport Township, Luzerne County, into a technology and data-center development supported by on-site natural-gas fuel-cell power generation. The project will also require new electricity, natural-gas, water and sewer infrastructure.
The contrasting projects illustrate the different energy strategies developers are pursuing as they build new infrastructure to meet the growing electricity demands of data centers.
