TC Energy Pipeline Expansion Advances with US Projects and Canada's Coastal GasLink Approval

TC Energy is advancing a pipeline expansion in North America with the Crossroad, American Midwest and ANR pipeline projects in the US and Phase 2 of the Coastal GasLink project in Canada. The projects aim to increase natural gas transportation capacity and meet growing demand from power generation, data centers and LNG exports.

On November 5, 2026, the Canadian energy company announced approximately C$3 billion (US$2.1 billion) in new US pipeline projects. Additionally, it approved the C$4.9 billion Coastal GasLink Phase 2 expansion in British Columbia. This followed a positive final investment decision by LNG Canada and its joint venture partners.

The US expansion programme includes the US$1.8 billion Crossroads Expansion and the US$400 million American Midwest project. It also covers upgrades to the ANR pipeline system. Together, the two projects will add approximately 2.4 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of gas transportation capacity. Furthermore, both are expected to enter service in 2030. They are backed by long-term take-or-pay contracts, which secure revenue through reserved pipeline capacity.

In Canada, Coastal GasLink Phase 2 will expand the existing pipeline in British Columbia. The system transports natural gas from northeastern British Columbia to the LNG Canada project export facility in Kitimat. The expansion will add approximately 2 Bcf/d of firm transportation capacity. Consequently, total capacity will reach about 4.5 Bcf/d. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027, with the additional capacity targeted to enter service in the early 2030s.

TC Energy Pipeline Expansion Advances with US Projects and Canada's Coastal GasLink Approval

Crossroads Expansion Targets Growing US Midwest Demand

The Crossroads Expansion is the largest newly approved US project, with an estimated cost of US$1.8 billion. It will add approximately 1.4 Bcf/d of natural gas transportation capacity in the US Midwest. Additionally, it will serve power generation and other gas-consuming markets. These include growing demand from data centre development.

The expansion reflects increasing requirements for reliable fuel supplies as electricity consumption rises across parts of North America. Gas-fired power stations remain an important source of dispatchable generation, particularly where electricity demand fluctuates or renewable generation varies. Additional pipeline capacity can help move gas from producing regions to power plants and industrial users, although the ultimate effect on regional energy markets will depend on customer demand, competing infrastructure and regulatory approvals.

TC Energy expects Crossroads to enter service in 2030. Its long-term take-or-pay contracts are intended to underpin the project’s commercial structure by securing payment for reserved capacity, subject to the applicable contract terms. The company has not indicated that the project is already under construction.

American Midwest Expansion Strengthens Northern Border

The American Midwest project is expected to cost approximately US$400 million and add 1 Bcf/d of capacity to TC Energy’s Northern Border system. TC Energy’s proportionate equity contribution is estimated at approximately US$100 million, with the overall project cost covering the wider development. The expansion is also targeting an in-service date in 2030.

Northern Border forms part of the natural gas transportation network linking supply from the northern Great Plains and Western Canada with markets in the US Midwest. Expanding its capacity could provide additional transportation flexibility for utilities, power producers and other customers seeking reliable natural gas deliveries.

Alongside Crossroads, American Midwest brings the combined planned capacity increase from the two projects to approximately 2.4 Bcf/d. The investment therefore represents a substantial addition to the company’s US transportation infrastructure. However, delivery will depend on engineering, permitting, procurement, construction and commissioning milestones.

TC Energy has also approved ANR Optimization work as part of its broader pipeline growth programme.

Coastal GasLink Phase 2 Expands Canadian LNG Supply Infrastructure

The C$4.9 billion expansion will add approximately 2 Bcf/d of firm transportation capacity. Consequently, total system capacity will rise to around 4.5 Bcf/d. The project will also include five additional compressor stations along the existing route. Furthermore, associated facility upgrades will help maintain pressure and transport larger gas volumes over long distances.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2027, with service anticipated in the early 2030s. LNG Canada and its joint venture participants have made the final investment decision supporting the expansion. TC Energy has also stated that project agreements are structured to limit Coastal GasLink LP’s capital commitments and exposure to construction cost and schedule risks.

The expansion could strengthen the connection between Canadian natural gas production and LNG export markets. Nevertheless, its completion will depend on construction execution, regulatory compliance, environmental management and coordination among the pipeline operator, LNG Canada and participating contractors.

TC Energy Pipeline Expansion Project Team

TC Energy Corporation: Pipeline owner, operator and developer of the announced US expansions and Coastal GasLink system.

LNG Canada: LNG export facility developer whose final investment decision supports Coastal GasLink Phase 2.

Coastal GasLink LP: Entity associated with ownership and operation of the Canadian pipeline system.

Northern Border Pipeline Company: Pipeline system associated with the American Midwest expansion.

ANR Pipeline Company: Operator of the ANR system involved in the optimization programme.

TC Energy Pipeline Expansion Project Outlook

TC Energy’s new US pipeline projects and Coastal GasLink Phase 2 will expand existing infrastructure to meet rising natural gas demand across North America. Meanwhile, Crossroads and American Midwest are targeting 2030 service entry. The Canadian expansion is expected to follow in the early 2030s.

The developments could improve transportation capacity for gas-fired power generation, industrial customers and LNG exports. However, their delivery remains subject to project execution, permitting, construction schedules and market conditions. For the US projects, the next milestones will include detailed engineering and construction preparation; for Coastal GasLink Phase 2, the focus will be on advancing work ahead of the planned early-2027 construction start.
