Riyadh road development program has entered a new construction phase after the launch of its fourth package, valued at approximately $2.6 billion (SAR 9.8 billion). The latest package will deliver four major road corridor projects across Riyadh, adding 40km of upgraded infrastructure. The works include 14 major intersections, 33 bridges, five tunnels, and six pedestrian bridges. Once complete, the expanded network will accommodate more than 950,000 vehicles daily, helping ease congestion and improve mobility across the Saudi capital.
The new package forms part of the Main and Ring Road Axes Development Program, one of Riyadh’s largest ongoing transportation initiatives. The projects aim to strengthen connectivity between key districts while supporting the city’s rapid population growth and economic expansion. In addition, the developments align with Saudi Vision 2030 goals for modern, efficient, and sustainable urban infrastructure.
Riyadh Road Development Program Targets Capacity Growth
The largest project within the package focuses on the southern section of Sheikh Jaber Al-Sabah Road. The development covers approximately 12km and includes six major intersections, 22 bridges, and three tunnels. Upon completion, the corridor will accommodate up to 350,000 vehicles per day. As a result, the project is expected to improve traffic movement between major districts and reduce bottlenecks along one of Riyadh’s busiest routes.
Meanwhile, the central section of Prince Turki bin Abdulaziz Al Awwal Road will undergo significant upgrades across a 9km stretch. The scope includes three major intersections, six bridges, and two tunnels. Consequently, the corridor’s daily capacity will increase to around 200,000 vehicles, improving connectivity throughout central Riyadh.
The third project covers Prince Mishal bin Abdulaziz Road over a distance of approximately 6km. Contractors will construct two major intersections, two bridges, and four pedestrian bridges. Therefore, the upgraded corridor will support traffic volumes of up to 200,000 vehicles daily while enhancing pedestrian safety and accessibility.
In addition, the western section of Najmuddin Al-Ayoubi Road will receive upgrades along a 13km corridor. The works include three major intersections, three bridges, and two pedestrian bridges. Once complete, the road will accommodate approximately 200,000 vehicles per day and strengthen east-west connectivity across western Riyadh.
Riyadh Road Development Program Supports Urban Expansion
The fourth package reflects Riyadh’s continued investment in transportation infrastructure as the city pursues ambitious growth targets. With population numbers rising and new developments emerging across the capital, authorities continue to expand road capacity to meet future demand.
Moreover, the projects will help reduce travel times and improve traffic efficiency throughout the city. Better connectivity between residential communities, commercial districts, and emerging development zones should also support economic activity and urban growth.
The upgraded infrastructure will further enhance Riyadh’s readiness to host major international events and attract global investment. At the same time, improved road networks will contribute to a higher quality of life by providing smoother and safer journeys for residents and visitors.
As Saudi Arabia accelerates its infrastructure development agenda, the fourth package stands out as one of the Kingdom’s most significant urban road construction investments. The projects reinforce the government’s commitment to building a future-ready transportation system capable of supporting Riyadh’s long-term development objectives.
Similar large-scale road infrastructure investments are also transforming mobility elsewhere in the region. In the UAE, the recently completed Dubai-Sharjah Road Project has improved connectivity between the two emirates through upgraded transport corridors designed to ease congestion and enhance traffic flow. Like the Riyadh Road Development Program, the project demonstrates how strategic road construction continues to support urban growth and economic development across the Gulf region.
