Tanzanian sports fans are thrilled as China officially hands over Phase One of the National Stadium Complex in Dar es Salaam to the government after seven years of construction of the massive project.

Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Lu Youqing and Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports Sihaba Mkinga signed and exchanged handover certificates during a brief ceremony held at the venue recently.

This means that the management of the state-of-the-art stadium is now wholly under the Tanzania government and the Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports. The Tanzanian government expressed sincere gratitude to the government of China for playing a key role in financing, construction and management of the stadium.

The modern structure is meant to be a motivational factor for sports to grow in the country and attract the attention of the world as many international events will be staged in Tanzania.

Chances are high for the Chinese government to finance and carry out the planned phase II project, which will among others include an indoor stadium, warm-up ground, sports village/college and other related facilities.
