The government of Tanzania has spent US$25.4mn on the construction of Mbaka and Lufilo bridges. The bridges link Kikusya Village and Matema Road in Kyela District. Additional construction to the bridges is a 34.6km tarmac road.

According to the Project Engineer Samuel Joel, both bridges are 98 per cent complete. The Tanzania Roads Agency (Tanroads) awarded the project to the China International Engineering Company Ltd. However, the China Engineering company need to deliver the project come end of 2017.

Inspecting the bridges, Mbeya Regional Commissioner Amos Makalla directs both the contractor and Tanroads to ensure the project is complet ahead of the rainy season.

“I want this project to come to completion in October. This is because when the rainy season starts, construction work will be interrupted and this will cause complaints,” said Mbeya Regional Commissioner Amos Makalla.

Tanzania government has invested a lot of money on the project is expecting the project to get high end supervision of up to the standards.

However, according to Juma Mgatta, Kyela District Council Executive Director, the implementation of the project has experienced some challenges. Among the challenges includes some residents not paving the way for the construction of the road.  In fact some of the stubborn residents have put up their structures within the road reserve.
