Morgan Offshore Wind Project has returned to the market after the UK launched an accelerated competitive tender for the 1.5 GW Irish Sea development. The renewed procurement creates another opportunity for developers to secure one of Britain’s most advanced offshore wind sites.
Importantly, the project already holds significant planning progress, making it attractive for investors seeking faster delivery. Industry analysts estimate the development could require about $4.5 billion in capital investment, depending on final design, turbine selection, and supply chain costs.
The accelerated process follows the project’s discontinuation earlier this year after its previous developers surrendered the lease.
Rather than delaying redevelopment, authorities reviewed available options and opted for a fast-tracked competition. The approach aims to keep construction momentum while supporting Britain’s clean energy targets and expanding domestic electricity generation.
Morgan Offshore Wind Project offers developers a construction-ready opportunity
The Morgan Offshore Wind Project occupies a strategic location in the Irish Sea with capacity to generate up to 1.5 GW of electricity. Originally awarded during Offshore Wind Leasing Round 4 in 2021, the project advanced through environmental studies, engineering work, and planning approvals. The previous development consortium discontinued the project in January 2026 after changing commercial priorities and assessing project economics.
Following that decision, the lease reverted to The Crown Estate for reassignment through a competitive process. Unlike many early-stage offshore developments, Morgan enters the new tender with major regulatory milestones already achieved. The offshore wind farm secured its Development Consent Order for generation assets during 2025.
Meanwhile, authorities continue reviewing the joint transmission infrastructure application covering both Morgan and the nearby Morecambe project.
Officials expect that transmission decision during September 2026. The site also retains an existing grid connection agreement with the National Energy System Operator, reducing development uncertainty for future bidders.
The accelerated procurement will accept bids throughout the summer before moving into a rising-clock auction process. The preferred developer should emerge before the end of 2026. That timetable allows construction planning to continue without significant interruption.

The Morgan Offshore Wind Project represents more than another renewable energy lease.
