Nearly a year after state and local leaders celebrated a landmark economic win, Amazon Web Services has moved from vision to execution on its $3 billion data center campus in Warren County.
When Governor Tate Reeves and AWS officials gathered at Vicksburg’s Mississippi Center for Innovation and Technology on Nov. 20, 2025, they announced what remains the largest private-sector investment in county history—a multi-building technology campus intended to reshape the regional economy.
Now, following a community update Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2026, AWS has released a detailed physical roadmap and construction timeline to bring that vision to life.
Overcoming Major Engineering Hurdles
Before server racks or steel beams arrive on the property between U.S. 61 and Dana Road, the project’s immediate focus is a massive landscape transformation.
AWS economic development representative Andrea Hutchins told residents that portions of the site feature terrain drop-offs of up to 72 feet. Crews are preparing to launch intensive mass-grading operations to level the earth, a step planners say is critical not only for structural stability but for ensuring primary access points can safely support heavy construction logistics.
Vicksburg Data Center Campus: Designing With the Community in Mind
With a project of this scale, residents and parents raised predictable concerns about neighborhood disruption and traffic safety. Hutchins addressed those directly during the September update, emphasizing that the campus layout was intentionally designed to isolate industrial traffic from residential areas.
Under the current site plan, the main operational and construction entrance will be off U.S. 61. Access from Dana Road is designated strictly as an emergency entrance—a deliberate safety measure to keep heavy trucks away from nearby Dana Road Elementary School.
The Local Gold Rush: Opportunities for Regional Contractors
For local business owners, subcontractors and suppliers, the multi-billion-dollar build represents a historic economic horizon.
AWS expects to select a general contractor in the first quarter of 2027, following completion of final design work targeted for April 2027. That selection will unlock procurement opportunities for local trades.
To ensure regional businesses are positioned to compete, AWS plans to partner with the Vicksburg-Warren Chamber of Commerce to host vendor information sessions. These events will guide local contractors through the process of becoming direct AWS vendors and joining the project’s supply chain.
Company representatives noted that securing a foothold in the AWS supply chain can open doors to broader regional and national markets, pointing to Mississippi-based contractors who have already leveraged local tech builds to win out-of-state work.
The Roadmap to 2029
Once mass grading and site preparation conclude, the project will shift into vertical construction. The current site plan anticipates a campus featuring as many as four data center buildings within the designated footprint.

- Late 2026 — Mass Grading: Extensive earthwork and leveling across the U.S. 61 and Dana Road property.
- Q1 2027 — General Contractor Selection: Kicking off local supplier and subcontractor engagement.

The Vicksburg campus is advancing under a structured timeline and early community engagement, but similar projects elsewhere are meeting stiff resistance. In Colorado Springs, city councilors this week delayed a final vote on the $1 billion Project Taurus AI data center until April 2027 after an 11-hour hearing that turned chaotic and raised sharp questions over power, water and noise. The contrast underscores a growing national divide: in some communities, data center projects are moving ahead with clear safeguards and vendor pathways; in others, they are stalling amid intense local opposition and unresolved utility concerns.
