The Oklahoma City Council approved zoning for a proposed data center project. This will allow the plans for the data center to move forward under specific conditions.

The data center project was proposed by Beltline Energies. It is set to be located near Interstate 40 and Frisco Road.

What is Zoning?

Zoning is the set of rules a local government uses to divide land into specific districts (such as residential, commercial, industrial, or agricultural) to control how property can be built on and used.

In this case of Oklahoma City (OKC) and Beltline Energy’s new mega-data center approved by the City Council on October 27, 2026, zoning means the city officially reclassified the land near I-40 and Frisco Road to allow a massive tech facility, but placed legally binding restrictions on it.

Council Issues Conditions for the Data Centre

However the council issued the approval under special conditions. These conditions include addressing water usage, electricity and noise.

Also, according to Mayor David Holt the company’s application was submitted before Oklahoma City’s moratorium on data center projects took effect. Additionally, he emphasized that the council’s decision should not be viewed as a precedent for future developments. Also, Oklahoma has been strict on data center development, with other projects slated for the area not coming to completion.

“I do not think that means that Oklahoma City is open for business for data centers. I think this is kind of a stand-alone vote that should not send a signal that Oklahoma City is open for this type of project. Moreover, it merely is a reflection of a very unique set of circumstances,” Holt said.

Lastly, the city said additional agreements must be finalized before construction can begin.
