The southern Texas border wall project is a planned border infrastructure development in Starr County, Texas, intended to add approximately 20 miles of barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden approved the construction of the border barrier in an area where officials had reported increased numbers of border crossings. The project is being funded through congressional allocations originally designated for border barrier construction in the Rio Grande Valley.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the funding was allocated by Congress for border barrier construction during the 2019 fiscal year and must be used for its intended purpose.
The planned construction represents a change from the Biden administration’s earlier position on additional border wall construction. The administration had previously stated that a border wall was not considered a significant solution to issues along the southern border.
Project information indicated that more than 245,000 border crossings had been recorded in the Rio Grande Valley during the year, contributing to increased attention on border infrastructure in the region.

US Customs and Border Protection justified the most recent action. It claimed that it was made with funds that were initially set aside for a border barrier. According to the statement, Congress allocated funds for the construction of the border barrier in the Rio Grande Valley for the financial year 2019. DHS needs to use those funds for its intended purpose.

The border project is also advancing as work on the $1.7bn Big Bend Border project is has commenced in the Big Bend National Park. Currently, equipment is officially mobilizing inside the national park in southwest Texas. U.S. Customs and Southwest Valley Constructors are jointly coordinating early phases.
Moreover, this ongoing mobilization acts as an opportunity to secure the region. The proposed border project site spans rugged Big Bend National Park. Moreover, it is planned as a low-profile, strategic security route. It will also host 17 miles of barriers and 205 miles of roads.
Why the environmentalists are against the construction of the border wall
Environmentalists are unhappy with the decision. They claim the construction could harm the habitats of threatened plants and animals.
The barriers will be made of huge bollards embedded into a concrete base. Additionally, there will be gates, cameras, and CCTV gadgets, according to a US Customs and Border Protection strategy.
This is the first time the administration led by Biden administration has exercised the power to approve the completion of new walls. A move like this was frequently made when Mr. Trump was in office. It resulted in the construction of around 50 miles of new walls. Additionally, approximately 400 miles of barriers that already exist were upgraded.
