Significance of Reopening the Iowa Nuclear Plant

Nuclear energy is preferred to be more viable as it will provide round-the-clock carbon-free power. Moreover, it is more viable as the world aims to slash emissions while feeding a rapidly growing need for electricity. This effort is being witnessed globally, with a close and good example being Japan’s Mihama Plant that is also planning for a comeback since the 2011 Fukushima accident.
Google’s power supply deal with NextEra follows a similar agreement between Microsoft and Constellation Energy last year and a recently announced Fermi America deal South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility to support the development of its planned 11GW data center campus in Amarillo, Texas. The move is expected to enable the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania to reopen in 2028.
The Palisades nuclear power plant in Michigan is scheduled to be the first fully decommissioned US nuclear power plant to reopen later this year. Moreover, experts note that it is much more cost effective and faster to reopen a mothballed power plant than build a new facility from scratch. However, critics have warned that any effort to reopen retired power plants must not be rushed and should adhere to strict regulatory standards.
