Maydan Mahzam field redevelopment is advancing as QatarEnergy moves to modernize its ageing offshore oil infrastructure. The project targets improved facility performance and an extended operational lifespan for one of Qatar’s longstanding producing oil fields. Aker Solutions has received a letter of award from PTSC Mechanical and Construction Limited Company (PTSC M&C). The award covers detailed design services for several offshore installations under the wider redevelopment program.
The overall Maydan Mahzam redevelopment carries an estimated investment of $4 billion–$5 billion. Meanwhile, Aker Solutions classifies its engineering award as a sizeable contract. Its value falls between NOK 500 million and NOK 1.5 billion, approximately $54 million–$162 million. However, the precise contract value remains undisclosed. The award also remains subject to signing the final contract.
The engineering appointment introduces another stage in QatarEnergy’s efforts to upgrade offshore infrastructure. It also brings together international engineering and construction capabilities across several project locations.
Maydan Mahzam Field Redevelopment Advances Offshore Engineering
Aker Solutions will undertake detailed design for three major topsides, four jackets and brownfield tie-ins. These structures and connections form part of PTSC M&C’s wider offshore construction package.
Topsides accommodate essential processing equipment and operational systems on offshore platforms. Meanwhile, jackets provide structural support by anchoring platforms to the seabed. Brownfield tie-ins will connect new installations with existing offshore infrastructure.
Consequently, the engineering work must account for the integration of new facilities with operating assets. This interface will support the redevelopment’s wider infrastructure modernization objectives.
Aker Solutions will execute the assignment through its engineering teams in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Mumbai, India. The two offices will combine their offshore engineering capabilities to deliver the required design services.
Guro Rausand, Executive Vice President of New Build at Aker Solutions, highlighted the company’s offshore engineering experience. She also pointed to collaboration between the Kuala Lumpur and Mumbai teams.
The company expects to record the order intake during the fourth quarter of 2026. This depends on signing the final contract.
Maydan Mahzam Field Redevelopment Targets Longer Asset Life
The Maydan Mahzam oil field lies approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Qatar’s coastline. It also sits about 28 kilometers southeast of Halul Island, in approximately 40 meters of water.
The field, alongside neighboring Bul Hanine, emerged from discoveries during the 1960s. Production at Maydan Mahzam began in 1965, making infrastructure modernization increasingly important.
QatarEnergy intends to upgrade the field’s facilities and extend its productive lifespan. The redevelopment forms part of its broader offshore asset management program.
According to QatarEnergy’s 2023 Annual Review, its redevelopment program dates back to 2010. The original field-life extension plan included 45 new wells targeting four Arab reservoirs. It also identified a new wellhead jacket and significant facility and pipeline upgrades.
The wider construction program involves multiple engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning packages. PTSC M&C secured a key package involving offshore installations and modifications. Its partnership with Singapore’s Seatrium also supports the broader execution arrangement.
Additionally, China Offshore Oil Engineering Corporation (COOEC) secured another package covering subsea infrastructure. This includes pipelines, cables and umbilicals.
The division of work allows different contractors to address specialized offshore construction requirements. It also highlights the international supply chain supporting Qatar’s offshore redevelopment ambitions.
Maydan Mahzam Field Redevelopment Strengthens Offshore Infrastructure
The engineering award represents an important design milestone before the wider installation activities progress. Detailed engineering will establish the technical requirements for the new offshore structures and existing facility connections.
Furthermore, the project requires coordination between engineering teams, construction contractors and the field operator. This coordination will help address structural interfaces and installation requirements.
The redevelopment also reflects QatarEnergy’s continued investment in maintaining mature offshore oil assets. Rather than relying exclusively on new discoveries, the program seeks to maximize existing infrastructure.
However, the latest award does not confirm a construction completion date for Aker Solutions’ engineering scope. Nor does it establish the precise value of its contract.
The final agreement will determine the contractual position and enable the company to recognize the order intake. Meanwhile, the wider redevelopment remains a significant offshore construction undertaking for Qatar’s energy sector.
Qatar’s offshore redevelopment program reflects a wider regional push to sustain production from mature oil fields. Saudi Arabia is pursuing similar infrastructure expansion through the Zuluf field oil increment project, which recently reached commissioning following a reported $7 billion investment. Both developments highlight continued investment in offshore production capacity and long-term field performance.
