The $800 million Kansas City data center project has transitioned from construction into operational status, reflecting steady progress in hyperscale infrastructure delivery. The facility, developed by Meta, is now active and integrated into the company’s global data infrastructure network. Moreover, the project, which broke ground in 2022, reached a major milestone in August 2025 when it began serving live data traffic. Consequently, the development has shifted from a construction-led phase to operational optimization and community integration as of 2026.
The data center campus represents a significant investment in Missouri’s digital infrastructure landscape. Additionally, the facility supports Meta’s broader push to expand artificial intelligence and cloud capacity across the United States. Meanwhile, the project created approximately 1,500 construction jobs at peak activity and now sustains over 100 permanent operational roles.
Furthermore, the campus continues to influence regional development, with ongoing discussions around energy use, zoning, and economic impact. In contrast to stalled developments such as Project Matador, which faces leadership and financing uncertainty, the Kansas City project demonstrates a phased and tenant-backed delivery model that has enabled successful execution.
Current Status Update (2026)
As of 2026, the Kansas City data center is fully operational and actively supporting Meta’s global digital services. The facility continues to run at scale while contributing to local economic programs and infrastructure development.
Additionally, construction activity on surrounding or expansion components has slowed, transitioning toward maintenance and operational efficiency improvements. Meanwhile, the project remains part of a broader ecosystem of data center investments in the region, where new developments continue to emerge alongside operational facilities.
However, while the Kansas City facility has reached operational maturity, other large-scale AI infrastructure developments face delays. For example, Project Matador, a $60 billion Trump-branded AI data center megaproject in Texas, has stalled due to leadership changes, lack of anchor tenants, and engineering challenges. This contrast highlights the importance of phased delivery and secured tenancy in hyperscale construction projects.
Meta would use some of the space in the vast technological park, which would probably eventually include additional enterprises. The construction of the technology park will allegedly feature 16 buildings and 760 acres near the southwest corner of Northwest 128th Street and US Highway 169. Meta would require 375 acres and three structures.
Meta picked Kansas City as the site of the planned data center due to its central position, lower risk of natural catastrophes, competitive energy pricing, and renewable energy sources.
Last year, the Kansas City Council approved up to US$ 8.2bn in tax breaks for the data centre site. Plans had been filed at the time, including a business named Velvet Tech Services, LLC, which turned out to be a shell company for Meta.
Expectations for the US$ 800M Data Center in Kansas City
According to Gov. Mike Parson, the project would create 100 new permanent jobs and 1,300 temporary ones during peak construction. The governor stated that the site will be powered entirely by renewable energy and will contribute more renewable energy to the region’s local grid.
